E-mail addresses

Posting an apology to all QACC members whose e-mail addresses ended up posted to the blog.  For some of you this was no big deal as you are either out there publicly as a QACC member and your e-mail address is out there in a fashion (whether as the chair, the chair of a committee, or because your regularly post info about what your group is doing).  However for others who had a reasonable expectation that your e-mail address would not end up on the blog, I humbly apologize and will do my best to ensure that it does not end up out there again.

Open House to Learn About the Mercer West Project

Improvements proposed for Mercer Street from Dexter Avenue N to Elliott Avenue W

SEATTLE—The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is hosting an open house at Seattle Center next week to talk about improvements to Mercer Street, from Dexter Avenue North to Elliott Avenue West.

Date:  September 21

Where: Seattle Center, Northwest Rooms Plaza, Lopez Room

(at the intersection of  Warren Avenue North and West Republican Street)

Time: 4:30 to 7:00 p.m.

The project team will be available to solicit ideas from the public and answer questions about current design concepts for:

-          Widening the Mercer Street underpass at Aurora Avenue North;

-          Converting Mercer and Roy streets from one-way to two-way operation; and

-          Improving intersections, street connections and bike access.

The Mercer West Project would complete the City's vision for a direct, two-way connection between I-5 and Elliott Avenue West, continuing where the Mercer East Project leaves off.  The proposed improvements include:

·         Widening Mercer between Dexter Avenue N and Fifth Avenue N, including the underpass at Aurora, to provide three lanes in each direction, left-turn lanes, wider sidewalks, and a bicycle path;

·         Converting Mercer Street to two-way operation with two lanes in each direction and turn pockets between Fifth Avenue N and Queen Anne Avenue N;

·         Converting Roy Street to a two-way street with one lane in each direction and bicycle lanes between Fifth Avenue N and Queen Anne Avenue N;

·         Creating a new Sixth Avenue N connection between Mercer and Harrison Streets; and;

·         Closing Broad Street to re-connect the street grid between Ninth Ave N and Fifth Ave N.

PARK(ing) Day is Coming

Friday, September 17th

PARK(ing) Day is an annual, one-day, global event where artists, activists, and citizens independently but simultaneously temporarily transform metered parking spots into "PARK(ing)" spaces: temporary public parks.  PARK(ing) Day was created in 2005 by Rebar - a San Francisco art collective - and was originally devised as a creative exploration of how urban public space is allocated and used.  Did you know that about 25 percent of all land in Seattle (public and private) is dedicated to automobiles?  PARK(ing) Day shows residents what their city would look like if more public space was allocated for urban parks, recreation, social interactions, and other people-centric pursuits, rather than the movement and storage of cars.

Contact Max Hepp-Buchanan, as soon as possible.  He can guide you through the permitting process and get you started on planning your PARK.

Suggest a New P-Patch Community Garden Site

P-Patch Community Gardening received extra finances with the Parks and Green Spaces Levy.  Voters passed the levy that includes $2 million for new P-Patches and other community garden developments.  Now P-Patch community gardening continues to grow in Seattle.

The P-Patch Program's primary goal with new garden development is to increase community gardening opportunities in Seattle, especially for underserved communities. A first round of projects was identified in the spring of 2009 and work on those projects is moving forward.

The second round of projects will be identified in the fall of 2010.  From now until then, the community Is welcome to suggest new potential  garden spots.

Levy-funded projects will focus on publicly-owned land in the priority areas like Queen Anne, NW West Seattle, N. Delridge, Rainier Beach, N. Beacon Hill, and Ravenna Bryant. These areas are underserved by the P-Patch Community Gardening Program, getting denser, and have relatively high percentages of under-represented populations, or are called out in the Parks and Green Spaces Levy.

If you know of a potential site that might be a good fit, please let us know.  You can submit your ideas at http://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/ppatch/levyComment.htm.

During the fall, all the suggestions will be considered by a committee on the basis of strategic criteria and a racial equity approach to identify a final list.

Like all P-Patch community gardens, these projects will be public resources that build and sustain community as they are imagined, built, and cared for into the future.  Your good suggestions are a key first step.

Be Part of the Next Fifty

The 1962 World's Fair was one of the most profound events in Seattle's history. It triggered an unprecedented era of innovation, inspiration and growth – and it put the eyes of the world on the Pacific Northwest. 2012, the Fair's 50th Anniversary, is a hallmark time of celebration and contemplation; and once again, a collective of passionate citizens is collaborating to bring together the global community as we pause to shape our future.
For six months during 2012, Seattle will explore, debate, display and define a global vision. Engaging leading innovators from around the world and within our community, o
ur focus will be on the examination of seven core areas where Seattle has demonstrated leadership:

Themes of the Next Fifty:

· Arts, Culture and Design

· Sustainability

· Global Health

· Science and Technology

· Learning

· Commerce and the Innovation Economy Civic Action

Your ideas will be the foundation for this celebration.

Your participation will help create this extraordinary celebration and the vision for our future. Go to

City Data Open to the Public

Sixty city of Seattle datasets are now accessible online at http://data.seattle.gov, which is part of Seattle's municipal web site.  The new site holds significant amounts of information about operations and infrastructure, such as locations of city facilities, schools, and food banks.

Data.seattle.gov is a first step in making data publicly available to meet the city of Seattle's goals for an open, transparent and accountable government.  The site initially posts datasets from My Neighborhood Map, which is a feature on the city's website, www.seattle.gov.  It will add data managed by city departments, beginning with data which is commonly requested through the public disclosure process.  Some of this data is already available on department websites, but data.seattle.gov will centralize the information on a single site.

Department of Neighborhoods Events Calendar

Now you can post your events and activities to the Department of Neighborhoods (DON) new events calendar on our website.  Just visit our events page at www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/calendar, hit the link for "Submit an Event" on the upper left-hand column, read the "How to Submit..." and policy guidelines, and complete the form.*  Once your  event is submitted, it takes two-four days to have the submission approved and then it is posted to the DON website.  Not only will it appear on our calendar, but will automatically appear on the citywide calendar which gets thousands of hits a week.

*hint - when filling out the form, you can select more than one neighborhood and event type.

Neighborhood Bulletin Board

The NSC has a bulletin board with useful information about neighborhood activities.  If you would like to post something on the board, bring it by the main desk at the NSC and we will try to post it for you.

Woodland Park Zoo and Seattle Aquarium Passes

Passes for the Woodland Park Zoo and Seattle Aquarium are available at the NSC. These are available for low-income families with a limit of 4 per household.

Senior Discount Card Available

A discount card provided by the Seattle Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens (aged 60 or older) of businesses and organizations that give discounts and special offers to seniors.

Small Sparks Community Development Grant is Waiting!

Do you have ideas for building community that could use up to $1000 from the City's Small Sparks program? Small Sparks seeks to bring together new people. The goal is to get new people (e.g., recent immigrants, youth, seniors, and people with disabilities) involved in creative small-scale community building initiatives. For example, a Small Sparks project in the Beacon Hill neighborhood was done where people organized a paper airplane toss from a tower. If you have any ideas we would love to hear about them, and share information about the program with you! Email your ideas to Christa Dumpys at christa.dumpys@seattle.gov.
